Abstract
The Indian e-commerce market has witnessed unprecedented growth in recent years. The rapid digitalisation, expansion of internet connectivity, widespread smartphone adoption, technological innovations, and government-led initiatives have boosted e-commerce. Government initiatives such as Digital India, Government e-Marketplace (GeM) and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) have promoted transparent and inclusive digital market place for public procurement. Further, increasing participation from Tier-II and Tier-III cities, affordable internet access, improved logistics efficiency and innovative business models, including, quick commerce and Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) platforms, have accelerated the growth of e-commerce. The present study examines the growth and expansion of the Indian e-commerce ecosystem during the period from 2020–2025, with particular emphasis on the role of digital payment infrastructure, government initiatives, major growth drivers, emerging business models, and the challenges faced by the e-commerce industry. The study uses a descriptive-analytical research design based on secondary data collected from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), Press Information Bureau (PIB), government reports, industry publications and academic literature. The Indian e-commerce market has expanded from approximately USD 30 billion in the year 2020 to an estimated USD 145 billion in the year 2025. However, challenges relating to cybersecurity, data privacy, counterfeit products, return frauds, last-mile logistics costs and uneven digital literacy continue to affect the growth of e-commerce. The study concludes that strengthening digital infrastructure, enhancing consumer trust, improving logistics efficiency and promoting effective regulatory frameworks are essential for sustaining India’s long-term e-commerce growth.
