Abstract
The global agricultural sector produces significant waste streams that pose both environmental dilemmas and economic prospects. This conceptual discourse investigates the transformative shift from traditional linear “take-make-dispose” agricultural paradigms to circular bio-economy frameworks that repurpose residues into high-value commodities. Utilizing recent European and international research endeavours, the article formulates a comprehensive framework for resilient agri-business models that convert agricultural waste, including fruit and vegetable remnants as well as livestock by-products, into nutraceuticals, bioplastics, bio-fertilizers, and renewable energy sources. The article posits that effective agri-business models must encompass three fundamental dimensions: technological valorisation pathways, collaborative governance frameworks, and mechanisms for economic resilience. By integrating insights from multi-actor innovation networks and territorial circular economy strategies, this conceptual framework provides both theoretical advancements to the sustainable business model literature and practical direction for agri-entrepreneurs, cooperatives, and policymakers aspiring to implement circular economy principles within agricultural settings.
