Abstract
The aim of this review is to identify the ways in which SL influences EWB and WE, including key moderating variables associated with this relationship. By synthesizing data from a comprehensive and systematic literature review of 435 peer-reviewed articles published between 2011 and 2026, we classify mediating mechanisms into affective, behavioural, cognitive, outcome-related, and organizational psychological categories. The themes associated with the moderator category span eight areas: social, leadership, organizational context, job and role, cultural, environmental, psychological, and demographic variables. The results indicate that while SL enhances EWB and WE, it does so through highly complex and largely under-understood mediating mechanisms. Furthermore, this review highlights and identifies several shortcomings, such as the over-reliance on cross-sectional data collection and an overly simplistic definition of EWB. Our study provides new insights by synthesizing disparate information into an integrated model. Ultimately, it establishes a solid knowledge base that enables scholars and managers to make informed decisions regarding the development and management of SL.
