Abstract
The current literature review exhibits how previous research has looked upon the integration of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) into tourism industry using systematic literature review (SLR). The assessment shows that while VR usage is increasing, little is known about the features of different visitor demographics using VR for cultural tourism. The chosen studies examine consumer behavior, environmental sustainability, technological developments, and the economic effects of virtual travel, emphasizing metaverse tourism as a cutting-edge strategy for accomplishing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in sustainable travel.
Using PRISMA methodology, data were collected from major databases including Google scholar, SCOPUS, Springer Nature Link, Emerald Insight, and Taylor & Francis. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria and predefined keywords, 934 articles were identified and systematically analysed to synthesize current knowledge on AR and VR applications in the tourism industry.
Keywords Digital Tourism, Sustainable Travel Practices, Carbon Footprint, Virtual Reality Applications, Systematic Literature Review
