Abstract
Despite the immense benefits to the rural economy
and improvements in poultry production technology,
poultry farming causes some serious concerns
related to the environment, viz greenhouse gas
emissions and water and air pollution. Various kinds
of waste materials in poultry production, especially
poultry litter and manure, can seriously threaten the
environment as well as human health; this must be
managed properly. To lessen enormous pressure on
the environment as well as resource consumption,
circular bioeconomy plays a considerable role. This
study seeks ways to address the environmental issue
of poultry litter and manure by applying this waste
as fish feed in the context of circular bioeconomy.
The present study focused on sustainable farming
practices by linking poultry farming with fish farming
in South Damodar region, Purba Bardhaman district
of West Bengal. Under this farming practice, fish
farmers collect poultry litter and manure waste from
their nearest egg-producing company, and the nearest
broiler farmers working under the contract farming
system. After this, fish farmers convert it into a valueadded
resource for the fishery sector by using this
waste as fish feed. The study found that by linking fish
farming with poultry farming, poultry manure and litter
considerably contribute to fish feed in comparison with
other groups of fish feed. This study also observed
that there is a significant improvement in technology
adoption in terms of manure management. Finally, this study suggests some policy implications for the
development of poultry and fish farming.
