Abstract
Human capital formation is critical for sustainable expansion and development of service sectors such as hospitality and tourism. This study analyses how the Department of Tourism & Hospitality Management (THM) at Mizoram University helps in human capital formation through theoretical learning, skill-based internships and outreach activities. Employing a mixed-method approach, primary data from faculty (n = 7) and graduates (n = 76) as well as departmental archives were collected for secondary data. Among the standard instruments adapted were established human capital and employability scales, along with internationally recognized tourism capacity-building frameworks. Reliability was good (α = .835) for pupils; α = .772-.923 for faculty. Descriptive and regression analysis shows that entrepreneurial orientation (β = .553, p < .001) and academic inputs (β = .441, p = .006) turned out to be important predictors of employability satisfaction (R² = .723). While the impact of community on students weren’t thoroughly documented, the faculty’s perspectives highlighted the importance of the curriculum and its outreach efforts. This study shows that the Department of Tourism & Hospitality Management (THM) plays a crucial role in developing human capital in Mizoram, in line with the goals of NEP 2020.
