Abstract
‘Viksit Bharat’, or Developed India, promises a future marked by elevated living standards, strong economic growth, social fairness, and environmental sustainability. Since India’s independence in 1947, it has achieved significant progress, from the transformative Green Revolution to the economic reforms of the 1990s. Nonetheless, obstacles such as poverty, injustice, and infrastructural deficiencies continue to endure. The ultimate goal of Viksit Bharat is not just economic prosperity, but also social fairness, environmental sustainability, technological progress, transparent governance, and global integration. This vision is aligned with global goals, including the United Nations’ (UN’s) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Key milestones in India’s development include its industrialisation, the Green Revolution, and more recently, the rapid growth of the digital sector. India’s economic policies have urged substantial growth, with the information technology (IT) sector developing as a major contributor. However, infrastructure development and further industrial diversification are crucial to maintaining this growth. The role of technology, especially in digital innovation, is transformative and will be a key driver for the future. Despite the challenges, there are significant opportunities for India, such as leveraging its youthful demographic (the ‘demographic dividend’) and expanding renewable energy sources. Successful initiatives such as the Green Revolution and the Swachh Bharat Mission provide valuable insights for future development. Looking ahead, India’s development strategies need to prioritise inclusive growth, technological advancement, and sustainability. Realising the vision of Viksit Bharat will require co-ordinated efforts from the government, the private sector, civil society, and the global community to address existing challenges and unlock new opportunities for growth. The study highlights the important steps India has taken, such as launching skill development programmes, forming trade partnerships, and encouraging innovation, all of which are crucial for shaping its future. This paper aims to discuss the measures taken and the problems faced in the economic and social growth of Viksit Bharat@2047.
