Abstract

The fundamental transformations in work, workplace and workforce as a consequence of socio-economic and technological changes have impacted businesses and the IT sector can be assumed to be at the fore-front of these transformations. This study explores how work can be made more meaningful through goal setting and work design by examining the interaction of goal setting, work design, and work meaningfulness. The study collected quantitative data using validated scales, from six companies (n=972) across three roles (Client service, technology and support), to identify employees who experience high work meaningfulness. Results indicate a significant and positive link between work design (Autonomy, Feedback and knowledge characteristics), goal setting (Goal clarity and Goal conflict) and work meaningfulness.
