Abstract

The findings in the literature on calling are contradictory, and some details are poorly understood. To clarify contested discourses, this paper seeks insight into the process of comprehending and living a calling at work and clarifies the conceptualizations, states, and schools of calling. The authors conducted a systematic literature review and synthesized empirical studies on calling guided by evidence- based responses to the questions: ‘How do people discover and embrace their calling?’ and ‘How do they experience living their calling at work?’. The general model of occupational calling developed through the synthesis demonstrates the role of the individual and context in conceptualizing and living a calling and anchors on work as calling and career development theories.
