Abstract

The paper attempts to assess the impact of competition on social performance of microfinance institutions measured in terms of outreach breadth and depth. The study evidenced growing competition in the microfinance sector in India. The analysis reveals that though microfinance institutions have extended the breadth of the outreach but have narrowed the depth of outreach. However, the empirical investigation of the association between competition and social performance reveals a significant positive impact of competition on all parameters of social performance except percentage of female borrowers.
