Abstract

Retailing is of two types, viz Unorganized and Organized formats. Up to 1990s unorganized was predominant in Indian market. However, due to fast changing demographics, increase in youth population, government policies, higher affordability etc. prompted and facilitated organized retailing. Further, the declaration of Government of India policy with regard to FDI has propelled the growth of organized retailing in India. Studies in the past have indicated though there is a huge potential for organized retailing, the share of organized format is still in a single digit only in Indian market. Therefore, the study on Organized Retailing in India is Emerging – a study in twin cities of Hyderabad assumes significance. The study results indicate that the organized retailing, particularly in twin cities of Hyderabad, is yet emerging and has a long way to go to catch up with multi nationals.
